Clemens Westerhof’s men tamed the Lions to secure debut win at the 1994 Fifa World Cup staged in the United States
On 21 June 1994 inside the Cotton Bowl Stadium, United States of America, Nigeria played their Fifa World Cup first game ever in the 3-0 defeat of Bulgaria.
Goals from Rasheed Yekini, Daniel Amokachi and Emmanuel Amuneke helped Clemens Westerhof’s side tear apart Dimitar Penev’s team that paraded legendary Hristo Stoichkov and Yordan Letchkov.
The win enhanced the Super Eagles’ progress to the knockout phase as they finished atop Group D ahead Argentina and Greece though had their fairy tale come to an end in the Round of 16 when they bowed to Italy in the Round of 16 - no thanks to Roberto Baggio’s extra time penalty.
And 22 years after, we relive Nigeria’s biggest win in the history of the World Cup, and of course, Yekini and Amokachi famous goal celebrations.
